Goodbye, Jackson!

After a year, I feel like I haven’t had nearly enough time to explore Jackson—there are still dozens of restaurants on my places-to-try list! But I’ll be starting a new job in D.C. soon, so this is my last day in Mississippi. Thanks to everyone who reads and comments for being so welcoming, and for helping make this blog so much fun!

The good news is that Carpe Jackson isn’t going to die when I move. A few awesome friends of the blog have offered to keep posting, and I’ll continue running the Restaurant Openings Report. Of course, I’ll also be reading, commenting, and managing things from afar, and hope to do a couple more posts as well. So keep in touch!

King Edward Grill

I had never eaten at the King Edward Grill (235 W. Capitol St, Jackson), but an article in the JFP about the new chef made me want to try it out.  Because the King Edward Hotel is kind of a swanky place, I figured it wouldn’t be cheap (I couldn’t find a menu online)—so I decided to start small, with lunch.
It seemed that everyone else in the restaurant was getting the buffet, and our waitress looked surprised when we asked for menus instead.  The fact that they don’t usually serve …

Local 463

Last month, Derek Emerson (of Walker’s Drive-In) opened  Local 463 (121A Colony Crossing Way, Madison). Given the local love for Walker’s, I’m sure expectations for Local 463 were high.  But judging by the crowds at Local 463 both times I’ve been, people have not been disappointed.

Local 463 is a little rich for my blood for a random mid-week solo dinner. But even if you’re not up for a $20-something entree, there is something for you at Local 463—namely, pizza.

From the three pizza options, I chose the Florida rock shrimp and …

Wynndale Steakhouse

Wynndale Steakhouse (6672 Terry Rd, Terry) has a laid back (some would say divey) charm, amazing steak, and is located in a former gas station.  That combination makes it one of my new favorite Jackson-area restaurants.

For three of us, we ordered a jalapeño-shrimp popper appetizer, a half rack of ribs, and the 32-oz sirloin (for two).  What with all of the sides and a trip to the salad bar for each of us, it was so much food that we were all groaning by the end of the meal, and yet …

Bill’s Greek Tavern

I ordered my food from Bill’s Greek Tavern (4760 McWillie Dr, Jackson) to go, but everyone in the restaurant was having such a good time that I wished I could stay.  Next time, I will be bringing some wine and eating in.

Even though I would have had more fun eating in, I certainly did not get skimped, food-wise, by taking out. For $20, I got two giant red snapper filets (I was told this was the best fish of the day), a baked potato, veggies, pita, and a fairly large …

Pecan Park Cafe

The Pecan Park Cafe (1039 Pecan Park Cir., Jackson) is a friendly soul food restaurant that opened in May.

A lunch plate (meat, two veg, bread) costs $6.50, and is quite a lot of food (don’t be fooled by the low level of beans in the photo below—she actually filled it almost to overflowing, and it did in fact overflow into the rest of the container).  They offer a few things daily (fried chicken, baked chicken, baked fish, greens, string beans, lima beans, mac & cheese and rice & gravy), with …
