The Blue Rooster

A friend told me that the Blue Rooster (4822 Hwy 22, Flora) has the best burgers around. Then she told me I should call ahead to make sure they were open because they have unreliable hours, and I was there. I tend to have an affinity for places with unreliable hours.
Turns out they were open that Saturday for lunch (they may or may not actually have unreliable hours). They definitely do have some serious burgers.

This is the impressive Big Nasty: two patties with bacon, pepper jack, sauteed onions, etc, on a jalapeño cheddar bun. The patties themselves were very solid–unfortunately we were told we couldn’t get them less than medium, but it was a good juicy medium. The trappings and extras were all nothing less than awesome. The onion rings were well fried, with crispy, tasty batter and solid portions of onion.

I got the less hefty (but still very hefty) Rooster Burger (create-your-own)–I chose bacon, pimiento cheese, and a pretzel bun. Those were good choices. The pretzel bun had just the right amount of presence and denseness for a meat delivery vehicle–not overwhelming, but easily good enough that I would have eaten it on its own. The bacon was thick and the amount on each burger was not skimpy. The sweet potato fries were seriously amazing. I dipped them in that side of comeback dressing and I think I fainted a little bit on the first bite.
I’m not ready to decide whether these are my favorite burgers around, but I’m sure they’ll be on my short list no matter what happens. The Blue Rooster also seems like a fun place to watch a game or hang out over some beer.
