The Big Apple Inn received an award at the Southern Foodways Alliance's annual symposium, and more importantly, the group screened a great 20-minute documentary on the restaurant called "Smokes and Ears." It's online here: http://www.southernfoodways.com/documentary/film/smoke_ears.html

I've stopped a few times to get a mild smoke with an egg for breakfast, and I could see it becoming a habit. I do not know what they do to the sausage, but it's amazing.

Aren't the tamales of the south shocking? I had my first ones in Greenville, Ms (at Doe's). To this Western girl I couldn't fathom why the appetizer was 3, 6, or 12. Who the heck could eat 3 tamales at one sitting I wondered! Viva la difference.

Also? Pig ear? Ewww. You are brave.

ps: Glad to see you resurfacing from Carpe Durham :)
