Steve’s Downtown Deli

Posted by YAR 24 Oct 2009 8 Comments

If it weren’t for the strong sense of duty I feel to the three or four readers of this blog to try new places, I would be in serious danger of eating lunch at Steve’s Downtown Deli & Bakery (125 S. Congress St, Jackson) every single day. I’d go for dinner too, if only it was open for dinner.

This is what I order most days: the wrap “special” of Smoked Brisket with Cole Slaw and Raspberry Chipotle BBQ Sauce. I put “special” in quotes because it has been the special every day since I started going to Steve’s about 3 months ago. I can only hope that the word “special” just refers to how abnormally delicious it is, and that it will always, always be on the menu.

The brisket is tender, the coleslaw is light and crunchy, and the sauce is sweet with a just bit of spice. It hits the spot every time and I can’t imagine getting tired of it.

My second favorite thing on the menu (it’s not available every day, but is often one of the soup options) is the Senegalese Peanut Chicken Soup. The peanuttiness (not a word, I realize) is just right, and it’s a little bit spicy and a lot comforting.

Almost everything I’ve had there has been quite good, but with these two dishes standing well above the rest (and the one regular deli sandwich I tried being a bit disappointing). They also sell baked desserts, which I usually manage to resist, but the toffee cookie I gave in to once was great. Another plus (for me anyway) is that I always love the music playing there. I must ask if they’ll make me a mix cd one day. The most significant minus is that they are only open for lunch and only on weekdays.

NB: I hear that Steve’s will not be at its current address much longer. They are set to open up in the new Jackson Place downtown (the building at Lamar, Capitol, Farish and Amite Streets). The move is planned to happen by January. I just hope they have the same wrap special at their new location.

Completely agree on those two choices. In fact, I may walk across the street in an hour and grab a brisket wrap!

Hah, I just had one and it was as good as ever! I also tried the Thai soup, which I’d never had, and I liked it a lot (I slightly prefer the Senegalese, but this one was a bit spicier, in a good way). And yesterday I got the Red Beans & Rice (Monday’s plate lunch) and it was seriously one of my favorite red beans & rice that I’ve had in a long time. It had a very hearty, slightly spicy sauce.

AND, Steve told us today that he’s got a set-up (I’m not clear exactly what kind of set-up) over in a hallway at the Pinnacle Building (at Lamar and Capitol Sts) where he’s trying out a few new sandwiches.

The meatloaf is another winner. Too bad he is moving; my office is literally across the street. Keep up the great reviews.

Steve’s, Hal & Mal’s, Basil’s, Keifer’s, George Street, Two Sisters, Miller’s Grill, and the Mayflower are usually in my downtown lunch rotation. The fries are fantastic at Miller’s Grill on Capitol - get the special sauce for dipping.

I could eat that brisket wrap three times a day. I really miss it. I’m glad you’ve fallen for Steve’s. Please try the sweet potato cookies! I think they count as a daily vegie!

Don’t get caught sleepin’ on the roast beef po-boy either! It’s perfectly finished off with a chocolate chip cookie (or three).

I love Steve’s meatloaf and I don’t even like meatloaf.
