La Morena

I am so happy to have found good tacos Jackson. They’re at La Morena (6610 Old Canton Rd, Ridgeland)–the third taqueria in Jackson that I’ve tried and by far the best.

The tortillas were definitely freshly made–I’m thinking within a minute of being laid on our table. As soon as I saw them I knew that this was the place.

I got two tacos ($2 each): al pastor (spicy pork + pineapple) and chorizo. Both meats were as freshly cooked as the tortillas, and were full of little bits of blackened goodness. I’m used to tacos that are just meat, tortilla, and cilantro–if the ingredients and spices are right that’s all you need. But I loved that these came with queso and crema, which contrasted awesomely with the spicy and crispy meat. Also, the pineapple chunks in the al pastor were actually discernible, which is kind of rare, and not all dried out like they often are.

I also tried a chicken quesadilla. The fresh ingredients were evident here too, so it was quite good, though not as tasty as the tacos. This one needed bigger helpings of one or the other of the two salsas on the table–orange (habañero) and red–both of which were great.

One friend got the al pastor torta. It was large, as tortas tend to be. See that big chunk of pineapple at the front right there?

And this is huevos con chorizo (eggs and chorizo), which I didn’t try but my friend very much enjoyed.
The rest of the menu looked good too, particularly the chilaquiles, which we saw delivered to the next table. Not to mention the $2 beers…I think this is my new favorite place.

[...] that I wouldn’t find good Latin American food in Jackson. But I’ve already had great tacos and pupusas in the area, and now I’ve found empanadas, so I’m pretty much [...]
Tried them today- see at least one reader is following your suggestions! I had a couple of tacos (chorizo and steak). These were the $2 variety and were basically just tortilla, cilantro and meat (no queso or crema), but they brought out an abundance of condiments, and overall they were pretty damn good. Particularly the chorizo. Had the rice and beans too- just your standard rice and beans heated in the microwave, but they too were just fine!
I’ll certainly go back, but I do like that avocado they put on the tacos up the road…

Hm, too bad about the lack of toppings–I bet you could ask for some though. It’s true, avocados do make everything better!

Didn’t mean to imply that I was disappointed or anything- they were still great!

I prefer La Guadalupe’s tacos too. Had the enchiladas the other day and they were great.

Glad to hear Jackson has a great taco seen, as small as it may be. The freshness of all the ingredients is clearly a plus and makes a big difference in taste. great find!

It should be noted that they are CASH ONLY… I’m so used to using my debit card that I was caught off guard, but they kindly offered to take a check which I luckily had in my car.

Went by again today- had a couple of tacos which were both really good and a gordita, which was great! Two of those homemade tortillas with chopped up steak, lettuce sauteed onion, sour cream (or crema?) sandwiched in between. Really, really good!

[...] magic, these tacos were not as good as the ones I’ve had elsewhere in town (at La Morena, Omonia, and La Guadalupe). The meat was not cooked to order, probably because they had to deal [...]
