Monroe’s Donuts
Monroe’s Donuts and Bakery (6310 Medgar Evers Blvd, Jackson) is another one of those adorable places that makes you want stop in, no matter how much you don’t need to eat a donut.

You probably can’t tell from that shot how extremely cute the sign is, so here’s a close-up:

I bet the face of the donut man in boxers is Mr. Monroe’s. He makes me smile even more than the thought of donuts normally does.

I really enjoyed the plain donut–it was a squishier Krispy Kreme–style donut, which I prefer. But even if you are not a KK fan you might enjoy these; these are far less sweet.

The real highlight at Monroe’s was the apple fritter. I can’t say that I have ever had an apple fritter that I didn’t like, but this one was well above average. It had that denseness and bumpiness that makes fritters so wonderful, and the filling was not overpowering and not too sweet. In fact, it was not too apple-y, which is good because I don’t particularly like apples. My boyfriend is trying to convince me that I’m wrong about that, and he has won the apple fritter battle. But not the war.
The only options on display when we went were the glazed donuts and the apple fritters, plus a case of bottled drinks. I’m not sure about the daily hours, but he told us he was open 5:30am to 6pm on Saturday. Even though it was our first time there, as we were leaving Mr. Monroe said, “Have a good weekend! I’ll see you next week.” Indeed you will, Mr. Monroe. Indeed you will.
