Steve’s 2.0 Beta
Steve’s Downtown Deli currently has a stand at the Pinnacle Building (Lamar St and Capitol St), where he is trying out some new sandwiches and preparing for his permanent move, sometime around January, to a new location at Jackson Place. I have a feeling I’ll be going to the new location as often as I go to the current one.
The stand offers soup and boxed lunches; the boxes are a pretty good deal at $8 for a sandwich, chips, and one of Steve’s great chewy cookies. I got a roast beef sandwich, and I hope it ends up on the menu at the new place.

The roast beef was thick and juicy and the caramelized onions added both texture and sweetness. I actually forgot that the mayo was supposed to be horseradish-flavored until I got a little hit of the horseradish near the end. I can’t say that I had missed it, but the spiciness was a good balance to the onions. The onion roll was also good, and solid enough not to have gotten soggy from the roast beef.
I’m not sure how long this beta version of the new Steve’s will be around–hopefully until the new location opens up. To find the stand, you can enter the Pinnacle building on Lamar and head back towards the parking garage (walk past the fancy fountain, not into the law firm offices). Despite the simple set-up, they even take credit cards.
