The Rotisserie

The Rotisserie (6547 Old Canton Rd, Ridgeland) is definitely not the famous former Rotisserie restaurant of Jackson, where comeback dressing was allegedly invented.  Instead, this Rotisserie specializes in rotisserie-roasted chicken, and offers just a hint of a South American feel along with some southern American familiarity.

I was really hoping this would be a Peruvian chicken joint, because Peruvian rotisserie chicken is one of the most amazing foods ever made (and I’ve only ever had it in the U.S.).  My hopes were raised when I saw that the Rotisserie offers fried yucca, which I think is generally a South American food.  As it turned out, this chicken was not as ridiculously succulent as the Peruvian-style chicken I’ve had, and it did not come with the heavenly white and green sauces that usually accompany that type of chicken (though my friend said that when he went he got a slightly sweet habanero sauce, which he liked).

Still, the chicken was very good.  It wasn’t as juicy as I would have liked, but it also wasn’t totally dry.  The meat was tender and the skin was a bit crispy.

The yucca was well fried and not dried out on the inside, though it wasn’t especially flavorful (and if the serving size looks skimpy, it’s because I had eaten one large piece of it in the car on the way home, which you should usually assume is the case when I get take-out).  The greens weren’t exciting, but I loved the cornbread, which was moist and vaguely eggy–not a traditional cornbread, but good.  On my friend’s visit, he got lima beans and bbq beans, both of which he liked.  He said the bbq beans were refreshingly lighter than most of the heavily sauced beans that are common around here.

They also serve burgers, ribs, and a pretty long list of sides (including sweet potato fries and a few types of beans that I plan to try eventually).  As much as I love bbq and soul food, I’m very happy to see a new type of restaurant in the area and will definitely be going back for more chicken.
