Big John’s Restaurant

Big John’s (3399 Medgar Evers Blvd, Jackson) is a good place to go if you feel like eating four to five sandwiches for four to five bucks. They may not be very huge sandwiches, but they’re pretty tasty.

The “smokes” sandwich, for $1, is crumbled spicy sausage with slaw. It comes in hot and mild, and I chose hot, which had a great burn to it. It was very similar to the smoked sausage sandwich at the Big Apple Inn, and without a side-by-side comparison I’m not sure which I liked better. The one at Big John’s had a different type of slaw that was a little more pungent; while eating it, I went back and forth on whether it was too odd, or whether it offered a pleasant, interesting balance to the spiciness.

I decided to give pig ears another chance (my third) and it’s now official: I don’t like pig ears.
Big John’s offers small sandwiches, the size of those at the Big Apple, for $1 each; the menu also includes burgers, fries, fried chicken and fried fish (as I waited for my food, several people ordered burgers, so I will have to try that next time). There are several booths, but most people seemed to be getting take-out. They’re open Mon-Thurs, 10am-9pm, Fri-Sat, 10am-10pm. 601-981-6953.
