Bill’s Greek Tavern

Posted by YAR 7 Jul 2010 8 Comments

I ordered my food from Bill’s Greek Tavern (4760 McWillie Dr, Jackson) to go, but everyone in the restaurant was having such a good time that I wished I could stay.  Next time, I will be bringing some wine and eating in.

Even though I would have had more fun eating in, I certainly did not get skimped, food-wise, by taking out. For $20, I got two giant red snapper filets (I was told this was the best fish of the day), a baked potato, veggies, pita, and a fairly large greek salad.  The salad was made with fresh, high-quality, vegetables and feta.

The fish was the highlight of the meal.  It was very simply prepared, with a lovely crust and very mild seasoning—most of the flavor came from the fish itself, which was well cooked and moist.  The veggies were a bit bland, but not bad.  And the pita was my favorite kind—soft, almost pillowy, and with the powdery reddish seasoning that I think is sumac.

It was a huge, enjoyable meal.  Next time (when I eat in) I plan to try their specialty, the gyro platter.  Bill’s is open for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday; the number is (601) 982-9295.

23 years ago they served a red snapper sandwich at lunch. I think I gained ten pounds that year.

I always wondered about Bill’s. It’s been there forever but it’s out of the beaten path when I’m looking for a meal. I’ll try to keep this in mind. :)

The gyros are amazing. Ate there for the first time a few weeks ago, and WOW. Check out this short documentary the MS Arts Commission did: http://www.msdigitaldaily.com/3/Lifestyles/CAT5/Foodie%20short%20films%20created%20as%20a%20result%20of%20unique%20collaboration/2604/default.aspx

We ate at Bill’s last night. Best red snapper ever! I mentioned the film by Barefoot Workshop to Bill, and he hasn’t seen it. I don’t think he goes online. Someone should give him a DVD of it. He said he wanted to show it to a friend or relative, I forget which.

Ate lunch on a recent Monday and what a fantastic experience!
Lived here all my life but this was the first visit. Bill said where have you been all these years?!?

Don’t worry, Bill. I plan to make up for it and then some. Service was excellent and I don’t think I’ve ever had fish this incredible. Will be back for dinner with a bottle of wine in hand.

God bless Bill and his family!
