I’d driven by Campbell’s Bakery (3013 N. State St, Jackson) hundreds of times, always thinking it was cute but never in the market for baked goods. When they started serving lunch earlier this year, I finally had a reason to go.
I’ve been twice for lunch and really liked it both times. Last time, I had a turkey sandwich. The menu says the turkey is “marinated with our own seasonings,” and those seasonings stood out more than I’d expected they would. I caught some rosemary, and the overall effect was nicely …

This second location of Crazy Cat Bakers (the original is in Highland Village) is an outpost in the Fondren Corner building (2906 N. State St, Jackson). It has no kitchen, and brings over baked goods and lunch items from the first location every morning. The focus seems to be on baked goods, but I was determined to get lunch when I went the other day. Though I liked my sandwich at the original location, I can’t say I was expecting a lot from a refrigerator of pre-wrapped sandwiches and microwavable …

I was pretty thrilled to hear that Scurlock’s Donuts was opening a second location downtown (125 S. Congress St–the entrance is on Pearl St). I haven’t yet been to the original Scurlock’s (4157 Robinson Rd) because getting somewhere before noon on a Saturday is not one of my strengths. But stopping to get donuts a couple blocks from work is something even I can handle in the morning.
My first trip was their first day open. There was already a long line at 8am so maybe other people had been prowling around every morning …

Crazy Cat Bakers (4500 I-55 N (Highland Village), Jackson) has a pretty intriguing sandwich menu, so I was excited to try it for lunch. Mostly, the ham + cheese + asparagus sandwich caught my eye. It sounded both borderline insane and yet totally obvious, somehow. I wondered just how crazy this place would be.
It certainly looks ordinary enough, except that it’s located deep in the bowels of the mildly creepy Highland Village. There are small tables both inside the bakery and outside in the courtyard (which is very pleasant except …
Baked Goods/Donuts, Mexican/Central American, Restaurants »
Naysayers told me before I moved here that I wouldn’t find good Latin American food in Jackson. But I’ve already had great tacos and pupusas in the area, and now I’ve found empanadas, so I’m pretty much golden.
Omonia (1290 E. County Line Road, Ridgeland) is a Mexican/Colombian deli and bakery that must have very recently replaced a Quiznos, as you can see from the sign. This is Omonia’s second location; they also have a spot in Pearl (466 N. Bierdeman Rd.) that I haven’t tried. I’m just glad they were able …
